Creating a Sense of Space in Photoshop
This project starts with an historical examination of the principals of aerial perspective or the tendency of things to fade as they recede into the distance. This idea is then developed as it pertains to photographs and we look at a number of examples showing the application of “faux” aerial perspective in Photoshop. These examples explore the concepts of:
- 3D effects in photography are created by the contrast of lights against darks
- Foreground areas have more contrast
- background areas have less contrast
- Aerial perspective is the application of a “fade into the distance” effect
Finally, a project image is assembled that teaches how to use:
- Shadows/Highlights adjustment
- the pen tool to make paths and selections
- a High Pass Overlay technique for enhanced 3D contrast
- the Clouds filter to simulate dust
- a screen layer to create light beams.
The original image, as well as the finished Photoshop document with layers are included with the work files. Also, for your convenience, the path for selecting the subject is included.
